Many people believe that television programs are of no value for children.

Do you agree? Why or why not?

  Model Answer:

Televisual media has become a pervasive force in the lives of families around the world today. Yet, a central question remains regarding whether watching television is harmful or beneficial for children. An analysis of this question reveals that television programs present three major concerns in the case of children, including depictions of violence, the use of profane language, and the representation of poor moral role models.

Television programs that portray violence are a paramount concern for parents nowadays. Recent research has shown that children may commit acts of violence because they wish to emulate the behavior that they see on television. This is especially true when violent acts are committed by well-known action “heroes.” In addition, television programs show cartoon figures, as well as actors, committing violent acts. Using comic situations to depict violent themes causes further problems with the way in which young people view violence.

Television programs that contain profane or disrespectful language also worry parents with young children. Because censorship laws have relaxed over the past few decades, it has become very common for television programs of each and every kind to show characters expressing impolite, rude, and insulting utterances to one another. Bearing resemblance to the case of portrayals of violence, children unfortunately often try to imitate these actions they watch on their television screens.

Finally, some parents are upset about the moral behavior depicted on television. As they struggle to teach their children moral and ethical values, parents might despair about the lack of morals and ethics represented in some of the so-called role models on television. For instance, certain characters not only have no remorse for their immoral actions, but also frequently go unpunished by larger society.

Because of these factors, many parents believe that television programs send their youth the wrong kinds of messages. The emulation of this poor behavior by their children is something they wish to avoid at all costs, and they have accordingly decided to ban television in their households for these reasons.

Advertising can tell you a lot about a country.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

  Model Answer:

Every country has its own culture and traditions. There is no doubt that an advertising campaign conducted in Russia will not have the same affect here in the United States. Let us take for example advertisement of food and restaurants.

A huge amount of fast food stands suggest their services for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper here in Houston. The competition is very strong. Every week you get in your mail-box an envelope with different types of discounts in exchange for visiting them or ordering pizza. Watching TV you are also from time to time invited to visit a restaurant in order to taste some delicious food. It is not because it is easy to make money cooking but because the demand for such service is high. First of all, people like to go out sometimes to have dinner with friends. Second of all, it is often impossible to drive home for lunch. It can be time consuming.

As for Russia, it is a great tradition to have dinner at home with the family and go to the restaurant for big holidays. Additionally fast food is not popular in Russia. So you will see advertisements of yogurts, coffee, dairy products and juice instead of restaurants and fast food stands.

In conclusion I would like to add that in order to succeed in advertising campaign especially on the international market company must know traditions, language and history of the country.

Social media are gaining increasing popularity, through which individuals communicate with others and obtain news information on a daily basis. Personally, I am inclined to the view that the merits of this prevail over the drawbacks.

The primary benefit of peoples everyday exposure to social media is that they can maintain a sound relationship with others. Young people attending university in another city or country can keep in touch with their family and friends, conveniently sharing their lives with each other. Working adults can easily communicate with their clients, which eventually contributes to their work performance.

Another major advantage is that people can understand what is happening across their country or over the globe in a timely fashion. In the past, the public could hear about the world one or two days after the events had happened as the technology then was under-developed. In contrast, news applications on electronic devices today can automatically send users instant messages, making it possible for them to know about current affairs without waiting.

However, the disadvantages of people being exposed to social media daily cannot be ignored, the most obvious of which is that their physical health can be threatened. If they spend an excessive amount of time on social media, chatting and keeping up with the news, they may lead a sedentary life, lacking proper exercise. In the end, they are likely to suffer from eye fatigue, headaches, and backaches.

In conclusion, I reiterate that there are more positive influences than negative ones if people use social media in their everyday lives to talk to people and access news coverage. After all, they can maintain good relationships with others and know about the world without delay. Nevertheless, I understand that using social media every day can damage their fitness. Therefore, I suggest parents control their offsprings screen time and adults participate in various activities.

I think the news media mainly plays two important roles in modern society – providing information and influencing public opinion – and I think its influence is generally positive.

Obviously, the news media provides people with vast amounts of information in various forms. We can access it by listening to the radio, reading newspapers and magazines, watching television and by surfing the Internet. The ability to access news media is important for individuals and organizations because we make many decisions based on the news provided to us. Some of these decisions are mundane. We check the weather forecast to see whether we should take an umbrella to work. Other news, such as that about the business world, could influence whether we invest our savings in certain companies listed on the stock exchange.

The news is often presented to us in certain ways, using specific words to try to control our feelings and thoughts. This can be the main negative influence of the news media. Very often, the news media portrays people in simplistic ways, giving us some facts, but not the whole story. In the USA, some news media tends to support the Republicans whilst others tend towards the Democrats and the portrayal of individuals can reflect this. This is somewhat inevitable, because the editors, journalists and owners of the news media have opinions and biases. So, I think that it would be better if people checked news stories from different sources instead of only using one source.

Despite the fact that the news media can report events incorrectly or with bias, I think that the general influence on society is good. More factual information gives us the chance to make better decisions, both in our personal lives and in our working lives.

The Influence of Social Media on College Students

Nowadays social media has become an integral part of the lives of college students. It has greatly influenced their daily routines communication patterns and even their overall mindset. However this influence is not always positive.

Firstly social media platforms offer a wide range of benefits for college students. They provide a convenient way to connect and communicate with friends family and classmates regardless of physical distance. Moreover social media can also serve as a valuable source of information allowing students to stay updated with current events and trends. Additionally social media offers numerous educational resources and communities for students to enhance their academic knowledge and skills.

On the other hand social media can have detrimental effects on college students as well. One major concern is the impact it has on mental health. Constant exposure to carefully curated and often idealized representations of others lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy comparison and low self-esteem. Furthermore excessive use of social media can contribute to decreased productivity and time management issues as students may become easily distracted by the constant influx of information and notifications.

To mitigate the negative effects of social media it is crucial for college students to develop a healthy relationship with these platforms. This can be achieved by setting boundaries on usage partiting in offline activities and managing screen time effectively. Additionally it is important for students to be critical consumers of social media content and to recognize that what is presented online does not always reflect reality.

In conclusion social media undoubtedly has a significant influence on the lives of college students. While it provides various benefits such as connectivity and access to information it also poses risks to mental health and productivity. Therefore it is essential for students to strike a balance and use social media responsibly.

Exposure to international media, such as TV, film and magazine, has a significant impact on the local culture. What do you think the impact has beenDo you agree that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages接觸國(guó)際媒體,如電視、電影和雜志,對(duì)當(dāng)?shù)匚幕兄卮笥绊?

Nowadays, the trend of international media overwhelming worldwide has been a heated social issue in debate. Personally, I think exposure to the global media has substantial influences on the local country, and its overall impact is negative, to the cultural extent.

Firstly, the main impact of international media on the local culture is that this trend is reshaping and substituting traditional elements, specifically, encompassing patterns of behaviors, religious beliefs, values, customs, food, clothing, lifestyle, social norms and morals, sports, arts and architectures. For example, in China today, cheongsam, traditional silk-made clothes of females, has been gradually replaced with the western-style dresses, jeans, tailored suits and trendy fashions,

due to the advertisement campaigns of international famous brands on the Internet or global fashion magazines. Another typical example is the change on leisure activities. Compared with Chinese traditional exercise like Tai Chi Quan, a kind of kungfu with slow movement, pictures and videos about foreign extreme games on the Internet and Hollywood movies are more impressive and attractive. Expectedly, skateboarding, rock climbing and bungee jumping have been the most favored outdoor activities among the youth.

What is more, this trend is risky, for the reason that such cultural invasion will endanger the survival of local culture. In a multi-cultural society, the local culture always fades, because of the high attraction of foreign ones. For example, during the process of cultural mergence, a whole China is monopolized with the exotic cultural items, from food of MacDonald to movies of Hollywood, from fashions of Paris to animations of Japan. In a long term, there would be a misunderstanding among the public that the global pop culture is superior to the local culture in China. Adversely, young generations would fail to respect and appreciate their own culture. In a long term, the national identities of China will go into extinction, because of the lack of popularity and protection. In conclusion, this trend causes cultural mixture, replacement,

competition, as well as the possibility of the death of the local culture. Therefore, the international media should be restricted, in order to keep the diversity of cultures.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television, newspapers, magazines, and other media pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people such as public figures and celebrities. Use specific reasons and details to explain your opinion.

I think the media pay too much attention to the private lives of famous people. Television, newspaper magazines and web sites dig up all kinds of past bad actions. They say that these are true reflections of a persons character. This may be true if they occurred only a few years before, but some of these are things people did as teenagers. People in their forties are expected to explain something they did when they were fifteen. If they killed someone, obviously thats more than a youthful mistake. Usually, though, these incidents involve experiments with drugs or being reckless in a car. Theyre not something that the public needs to know.

The media love to say that the public has a right to know. Thats not true. We dont need to know if a movie star or politician has had an extramarital affair. That is something of concern only to the people involved. We do need to know if someone were electing to public office has been involved in shady business deals, but we dont need to know if he or she defaulted on a loan twenty years ago.

It seems the media dig up these facts without giving thoughtful consideration to what might happen. It has an effect on the celebritys family, especially the children. A celebritys good name and credibility may be ruined before he or she can prove that rumors are false. If a case goes to court, paying a lawyer can use up all their money. Even if it doesnt come to that, they may find their career ruined.

When are we, the public, going to make it clear to the media that were tired of having to watch this kind of thing on the news? Wouldnt it be better if they would concentrate on more important issues?

It is argued that there is no necessity for paper books, magazines and newspapers to exist because an increasing number of people now can gain information through different modern devices. Personally, I totally concur with this idea in terms of convenience and timeliness.

The main reason why I believe hardcopy information is redundant is that it is inconvenient compared to information presented via modern communication devices. For students who are completing research papers, for example, they have to sit in the library, reading journals one by one to find references that can be included in their works. In contrast, if they use their electronic equipment, they can reach a much larger online database where millions of results can appear within just seconds.

Moreover, readers cannot be provided with the latest information if they choose to search for hardcopies of information. Many books and magazines were printed years or decades ago, and so what people read is already out-dated, which may not be useful to them. Meanwhile, newspapers report something from at least the previous day due to the process of printing and delivering newspapers to news kiosks. However, information regarding various themes and topics online is updated frequently; thus, individuals can have access to the newest information.

In conclusion, I am strongly in favour of the viewpoint that people do not need to use printed books, magazines and newspapers any more with the availability of information on the internet. After all, it is not easy for them to find what they want via the publications mentioned above and exposure to up-to-the-minute information is not likely to occur.

The government should control the amount of violence in films and on television in order to decrease the violent crimes in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this issue

Nowadays, many people argue that the government should control the amount of violence in films and on television, in order to reduce social crimes. In my view, this assertion is partially wise, and my reasons would be explored as below.

Admittedly, there are many good reasons for controlling the amount of violence in films and on television. First, violent films and television are mental poisons for the audience It is because they contains numerous of erotic, corrupt and provoking episode, with long exposure to which, viewers might become aggressive and eccentric. In addition, violence contents set negative role models for young viewers, especially the youth. Activities like fighting, shooting or killing done by movie stars send teenagers a wrong message that violence is an effective or even essential solution to all troubles. Therefore, these youngsters with immature minds begin to admire violence and disrespect social rules, which leads to the increasing of the juvenile delinquents. According to the analysis above,

it is clear that the measure of limiting violent information on media should be encouraged, for the reason that it can directly cut off the access to those illegal and evil behaviors and thoughts, thus keeping people from imitating them.

Advocates claim that the practice of controlling the amount of violence in mass media is a brazen violation of the peoples basic right to know the truth of the world. For example, some films contain some violence, but they reflect the things happened around us. Rather than producing negative effects on audience, to some extent, these films educate them. Furthermore, violence in films or on television programs cultivates peoples senses of crisis and responsibility, which makes ordinary people and police work better for public security. Consequently, it is

irresponsible and foolish to blame the media for violence in our society. As far as I am concern, I strongly believe that the amount of violence in films and TV should be controlled. At the same time, we cannot deny the advantages brought by them. And the best policy is to develop the merits of the violent films and television, while grading and filtering them.

Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, offering a wide range of benefits and drawbacks. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of social media is crucial in todays digital age.

On the positive side, social media connects people from all around the globe, fostering global communication and understanding. It serves as a platform for sharing ideas, information, and resources, promoting cultural exchange and breaking down geographical barriers. Additionally, social media has facilitated social and political movements, giving a voice to marginalized communities and enabling the rapid spread of important messages.

However, there are significant downsides to social media usage. One of the primary concerns is the potential for addiction and its impact on mental health. Excessive use of social media can lead to decreased real-life social interactions, contributing to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Moreover, the prevalence of cyberbullying and online harassment has raised serious ethical and safety concerns, particularly among younger users.

Privacy is another major issue related to social media. Personal data can be misused, leading to identity theft, phishing, and other forms of cybercrime. The influence of misinformation and fake news also poses a threat to the integrity of information shared on social platforms, undermining trust and creating social division.

the benefits and drawbacks of social media are significant and far-reaching. While it has undoubtedly revolutionized communication and information sharing, it also introduces serious challenges that require thoughtful consideration and responsible usage.

The issue of media violence just doesnt go away. Debate over its impact on the occurrence of violent crimes has been fuelled by the sniper shooting spree in American and high school shootings there and elsewhere. Personally, I dont deem it necessary for the government to regulate the media violence, or possible to decrease the violent crimes by doing so.

Media violence is the least to be blamed when it comes to the violent crimes. On the contrary, it even plays an educational role. Take critically acclaimed Saving Private Ryan for example, no one will deny the frequent and graphic violence in the movie reminds us that the portrayal violent behavior can serve artistic and moral purposes.Whats more, it makes lives easier for us. Fear and rage are what we inevitiably feel deep inside and what can depress us when oppressed. Media violence makes it possible for us to give vent to such feelings vicarously through the stories of others.

What, you may ask, sparks violent crimes? Where we should focus our attention on to reduce the violent crimes?

Though media violence is available to all, some absorb the messages with inmmunity whereas others are more vulnerable to them. How they make sense of it depends on their respective personal social experiences.Young, poor, discriminated, rebellious, and not infrequently, minorities, are the traditional images of criminals of violent crimes. Those who have simillar personal ecperiences are prone to take it for granted as what their life should be.
